​Child assistance is increasing​

As of January 2018, child assistance payments will increase by 0.82% for the year, according to the indexation of the personal income tax system. Consult the tables for 2018 to learn more about the amounts for the year.

​Increase in the default contribution rate for VRSPs

On 1 January 2018, the default contribution rate for voluntary retirement savings plans (VRSPs) will increase from 2% to 3% of the employee's gross salary. That rate applies to employees who have signed up for a VRSP offered by their employer but who do not choose the amount they wish to contribute by the given deadline.

​​$100 a year for the purchase of school supplies

Mr. Carlos J. Leitão, Minister of Finance, has announced a new type financial assistance to help with the purchase of supplies at the beginning of the school year. Each year in July, Retraite Québec will pay, with the child assistance payment, $100 per dependent child aged 4 to 16. Exceptionally, the supplement for the 2017-2018 school year will be paid in January 2018 to families who have signed up for direct deposit, and in February 2018 to families who receive their payments by cheque.

Publication of a regulation concerning member-funded pension plans

The Regulation to amend the Regulation respecting the exemption of certain categories of pension plans from the application of provisions of the Supplemental Pension Plans Act was published in the 6 September 2017 edition of the Gazette officielle du Québec This link will open in a new window.. It amends certain funding rules that apply to member-funded plans, as well as rules concerning the indexation of retirees' pensions and the use of surplus assets.

New social security agreement with South Korea

On 1 September 2017, a new agreement between Québec and South Korea will come into force. The agreement will enable Québec citizens to obtain a certificate of coverage for work in South Korea and to apply for a retirement pension under that country's social security system. Québec now has 36 agreements signed with various countries across the globe. See our website for more information.

Proposed amendments to the 2016 Agreement Respecting Multi-Jurisdictional Pension Plans

The Canadian Association of Pension Supervisory Authorities (CAPSA) is holding a consultation on certain proposed amendments to the 2016 agreement. The amendments concern funding rules and the allocation of assets in the event of plan termination or division. Individuals have until 31 August 2017 to present their comments to CAPSA.

Do you have a child under age 18? Between now and mid-June, Retraite Québec will be sending you your personalized child assistance notice informing you of the amounts that you will receive from July 2017 through June 2018.

Be sure to check the information concerning your family situation, and inform us as soon as possible of any changes. They could affect the amount you receive.

In 2016, the rate of return of the RREGOP fund was 7.6%. Consult the publication RREGOP Returns to find out more.

The unveiling of the rates of return for the public sector pension plans follows the Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec's announcement of last February 24. The Caisse achieved an average rate of 7.6% in 2016.

If you are receiving a retirement pension, disability benefits or survivors' benefits under the Québec Pension Plan, we will be sending you an income tax slip that you should receive by the end of February. You must enclose the slip, which indicates the amount you received for 2016, with your income tax return.
