Find out About Your Group Insurance

Your employment with the Gouvernement du Québec, whether in the health, education or public service sector, gives you access to group insurance, that is, to insurance offered to a group of persons and not to a single person. You pay part of it and so does your employer.

Insurance adapted to your needs is important for your financial health. It can also help you avoid a lot of problems. When you are healthy, you do not think about it much, but it is worth being informed on the protection plan you have and to assess whether it suits you.

Here are the main aspects to know about your insurance:

  • It is your group insurance contract that determines your protection plan and how much it costs. It depends on your class of employment or your union. For example, civil servants do not have the same insurance contract as professionals.
  • Several types of insurance coverage are offered at a lower cost than that of individual insurance because the risks are shared among the group of members who are insured.
  • Verify the types of coverage that are offered to you. You could avoid having to take individual insurance for a risk already covered. For example, your group insurance surely has mandatory salary insurance and drug prescription insurance. It may also offer you life insurance at a lower cost. Maybe it also provides travel insurance.

Important: The protection plan offered by your group insurance is considered as temporary insurance, which means that it ends if you leave your employment with the Gouvernement du Québec or if you retire. You will probably have other types of group insurance with your new employer. If you retire, reassess your needs in terms of insurance to decide whether you must replace the protection plan you had with your group insurance.
