I am an adoptive parent

You could maybe receive Family Allowance, which is financial assistance provided to eligible families who have a dependent child under age 18 who lives with them.

To receive Family Allowance, you or your spouse must meet all the following conditions:

  • Be responsible for the care and education of a child under age 18.
  • Live or lived with the child before the child was placed or institutionalized temporarily by an institution in the health and social services sector.
  • Live in Québec (under the Taxation Act).
  • Have one of the following statuses:
    • Canadian citizen;
    • permanent resident;
    • temporary resident who has been living in Canada for the last 18 months;
    • protected person.

Good to know

To receive Family Allowance, you and your spouse must file your income tax returns each year, even if you have no income to declare.

Filing an application for Family Allowance

Documents as proof to be enclosed with your application

Have one of the following documents as proof on hand and send it to us at the same time as your application for Family Allowance.

  • Your child is adopted

    You must provide one of the following documents as proof:

Accepted documents provided as proof
Accepted documents provided as proof for an adopted child
  • certificate of registration of adoption from the Court of Québec;
  • birth certificate issued by the vital statistics office of a Canadian province or territory;
  • adoption judgment from Québec or another Canadian province or territory, attestation of adoption judgment or the Declaration of Inuit Customary Adoption form;
  • placement order from the Court of Québec;
  • recognition of an adoption judgment from the Court of Québec.

Send us a clear and legible copy of your document as proof via the Sending a document online service. If necessary, we may require the originals or certified copies.

After filing your application, we will send you an acknowledgment of receipt.

Important!

Once you have sent your application with the documents as proof, avoid sending a new application or documents as proof in the meantime, as this may delay the processing of your initial application. We will contact you if you need to provide other information. The decision regarding your Application for Family Allowance will be available in My Account. It will also be mailed to you at the address indicated on your application, unless you chose the 100% digital option.

My Account

Choose the 100% digital option to not miss out on anything thanks to notifications. You will be informed as soon as new documents are available in your digital file. In My Account, you can print a copy of your documents related to Family Allowance at any time by clicking on the Print button in the top right corner of your screen.
